Accessory dwelling units (ADUs) are a great way to increase income for homeowners in Los Angeles County. They also help to address the shortage of affordable housing in the region.

However, there are some important accessibility considerations to keep in mind when building an ADU. ADUs must meet the accessibility requirements set forth in the Los Angeles County Municipal Code Section 11.60.010. These requirements include the following:

  • Doorways: Doorways must be at least 36 inches (91 cm) wide. They must also be accessible with a lever or push button.
  • Stairs: Stairs must be at least 36 inches (91 cm) wide and have risers that are no more than 6 inches (15 cm) high. Stair railings must be at least 36 inches (91 cm) high.
  • Bathrooms: Bathrooms must be accessible to people in wheelchairs. This includes having enough space for a wheelchair to maneuver, a roll-in shower, and grab bars.
  • Kitchens: Kitchens must be accessible to people in wheelchairs. This includes having enough space for a wheelchair to maneuver, countertops and tables that are at a wheelchair-accessible height, and accessible appliances.
  • Parking and communication: ADUs must have accessible parking and communication devices.

It is important to comply with these accessibility requirements when building an ADU. Failure to do so could result in a denial of a building permit or other problems after construction.

By considering accessibility, homeowners can help to ensure that ADUs are safe and convenient for everyone to use.
